Climb Baker with Becker
Summit Washington State’s Mt. Baker with Georgia State University President Mark Becker
May 26 – June 2

Climb a mountain with the university’s President, Mark Becker. Dr. Becker – a seasoned climber who summited Washington’s Mt. Rainier in 2013 – wants you to join him and Carson Tortorige to summit nearby Mt. Baker (10,778 ft.) with professional mountain guides from the American Alpine Institute (AAI). As part of Washington state’s North Cascade Range, Mt. Baker is volcanic and glaciated, and boasts some of the world’s largest snowfalls. Begin this eight-day trip by exploring the Seattle area and Washington’s beautiful San Juan Islands. Then, travel to the mountains for two days of training with AAI, including rope work, ice climbing and mountain crevasse techniques. The trip will culminate with a two-day summit attempt on the north side of Mt. Baker. Beginners are welcome but strong physical fitness is required. Training days with leaders are offered on campus before the trip. Student cost: $1,695 minus funds from Touch the Earth Scholarships and Crowdfunding donors. (The goal is for the trip to be free to students.) Cost includes flights, lodging, transportation, guide fees and some technical gear. Limited to 10 Georgia State students. Non-student spots may be available. Participant applications accepted starting January 19.

Informational meeting: Monday, February 2, 6:30 p.m., room 215 of the Student Recreation Center

Cost: Free for Georgia State students (pending funding)
