On September 17, Recreational Services hosted a wheelchair basketball event, Pushing Panthers, in the Student Recreation Center (SRC). In collaboration with Kinesiology & Health, specifically Dr. Deborah Shapiro, the two departments wanted to begin offering adaptive recreational sports programming. The long term goal of Recreational Services is to offer many different type of activities that includes as many people as possible. The wheelchair basketball event was the first step in that process.

The goal of the event was to give an overview on how to play wheelchair basketball. Staff and volunteers from Henry County Parks & Recreation and American Association of Adapted Sports Programs gave a clinic on the basics of moving in the chair and playing basketball in the chair. Once everyone was taught how to play, games were played on all 4 courts in the main gym of the SRC. Approximately 50 students and staff participated in the event, and everyone asked said they had a good time. It an good eye-opening experience.

Moving forward, a wheelchair league will be offered by the Intramural Sports program in the spring. Additionally, a wheelchair flag football clinic will be held in hopes a league will be created next fall semester.
